Let me reintroduce you to one of our favorite libraries in the area – the Algonquin Area Public Library. They have two branches — one at Eastgate and the main one at Harnish. We’ll chat about the main one because that’s the one we frequent more. I’ve raved about the library in the past, and in 2018, the library underwent extensive renovations to their children’s department so now it’s even better than before! Check out the changes below to find out why my family loves the Algonquin Area Public Library.
Amazing kids area!
There is now a dedicated area for kids to play. My daughter first makes her way through by entering through the fun little entrance.
Here you’ll find train tables, the fun playhouse from before, a light bright wall, a produce stand, and plenty of toys to keep them busy.
There are not just one, but two family bathrooms located in the play area and they are just the right height. Perfect for when the kiddies really, really have to go!
We love attending their programs here. They have regular storytime but extra fun programs like cookie decorating or playing with playdough. Plus, you don’t need to be a library card holder to attend most of the programs. Register ahead or drop in.
Plenty of seating
Want to read? Need to study? Get some work done? You’ll find plenty of space here including a Homework Center.
Our favorite area by far for reading are the super adorable reading nooks. Built into the walls, they are surprisingly very large and easily fits three kids. They even have lighting in them.
Forgot your charger? No worries, they have a charging station for you. If you remembered to bring your plug, they also have plenty of electrical outlets throughout.
Go for a walk
The library is located next to a trail which is perfect for a stroll. We usually pack some food and eat at the picnic shelter. Don’t forget your soccer ball if you want to play on the soccer field.
Location: 2600 Harnish Drive, Algonquin. The entire children’s area is located in the basement.
Hours: Check their website for hours.
Parking: Outdoor parking lot
