Planning a getaway to South Haven, Michigan? We loved staying at Waters View Inn South Haven, a historic inn just steps from North Beach and within walking distance of downtown. Our family of five absolutely loved our stay in Room 15, a spacious condo-style accommodation that gave us plenty of room to spread out while keeping us close to the beach, harbor, shops, and restaurants.

Disclosure: A huge thank you to Waters View Inn for hosting our stay. As always, all opinions are my own. Read full disclosure policy here.

Getting Started at Waters View Inn

Located near the harbor, North Beach, and downtown South Haven, Waters View Inn feels tucked away while still keeping guests close to many of the area’s most popular spots.

Before arriving, we received detailed check-in information by email and text. The experience is intentionally low-contact, so there was no traditional front desk check-in or key pickup. Instead, we followed the directions provided and made our way to Room #15.Finding the condo entrance took us a little effort at first, so definitely read the arrival instructions carefully before pulling in. Once we located it, though, check-in was simple and we were able to settle in right away.Parking is available onsite, but the lot is small and can feel tight, especially with a larger vehicle. The good news is that Waters View Inn is close enough to downtown that we were able to leave the car parked and walk to shops, restaurants, and the harbor.

A Little About Waters View Inn

Part of what makes Waters View Inn so unique is its history. The building dates back to 1883 and had welcomed visitors during South Haven’s early days as a Lake Michigan resort town. In fact, it is the original building on this side of the harbor. More than 140 years later, the historic inn has been updated for today’s travelers while still keeping plenty of its original character.

Today, Waters View Inn is owned and operated by Bobby and Josh, who are very involved in the day-to-day experience at the inn. Bobby and I communicated several times before and during our stay, and I loved how easy it was to reach him by both email and text whenever I had a question. They also have another B&B, Inn at the Park, for adults only.

We also got to meet innkeeper Kaitlyn during our stay. If we needed anything, she was ready to help, and we often saw her in the mornings when we walked over for coffee and breakfast. She’s the one that bakes the homemade breakfast goodies herself! Everything we tried was delicious, and those little personal touches are part of what made Waters View Inn feel so welcoming.

Our Experience Staying in Room #15

Room #15 felt more like having our own little condo than staying in a traditional hotel room. We had our own entrance, outdoor patio space, three sleeping areas, one bathroom, a living area, and a kitchenette. I also loved the décor. The navy and blue tones, crisp white, gold accents, and mirrors gave the room a cute lake-house feel that fit South Haven perfectly without going overboard on the nautical theme.

Bedrooms

Room #15 has three sleeping areas, which worked perfectly for our family of five. One enclosed bedroom has a queen bed and its own television, while the super cute bunk room has an adorable dinosaur theme that makes it especially fun for kids. The king bed is located in the main open living space, sharing the room with the kitchenette and living area rather than being inside a separate enclosed bedroom.

The Bathroom

Our room had one bathroom but it was huge! It includes a spacious walk-in shower, a clawfoot tub (cute!), a double vanity, and an additional sink. The extra sink and vanity space made the setup especially practical for a family sharing one bathroom.  Regular towels were provided, along with toiletries such as shampoo. Beach towels were also available for trips to the lake or beach.

The Living Room

The main living area had a comfy couch, a couple of chairs, and a TV, making it a nice spot for us to hang out together as a family. The TV had live channels, plus we could connect to our own streaming services. It was especially nice having a comfortable place to relax after spending the day at the beach or exploring South Haven.

The Kitchenette and Dining Area

Room #15 does not have a full kitchen, but the kitchenette had plenty of conveniences for our stay. It included a microwave, toaster oven, wine cooler, plates, mugs, wine glasses, and a coffee maker with ground coffee provided. There was also an electric grill outside, which gave us another option for a simple meal.

Tip: Guests can also head over to the inn’s main dining room for their grab-and-go breakfast offerings. Looking for a fuller breakfast? Bunde’s Bakery Cafe is right across the street. I loved having both options so close by.

The Patio

One of my favorite features of Room #15 was the outdoor patio space. It gave us another place to relax and made the room feel even more like having our own little vacation condo.

We ended up using the patios quite a bit during our stay. We ate dinner outside, brought our coffee out in the morning, and I even did a little work on my laptop while listening to the birds and watching squirrels dart between the trees. There was also an electric grill outside, which came in handy for simple meals without needing a full kitchen.

Common Areas at Waters View Inn

Guests can also enjoy several shared spaces throughout Waters View Inn. There’s a cozy couch area, board games, and a dining room with tables and chairs where you can sit and enjoy the inn’s light breakfast in the morning.

Be sure to take a look around while you’re there. You’ll find some of the inn’s history displayed on the walls, plus beach towels.

One of my favorite spots was the front porch. I loved grabbing a cup of coffee in the morning and settling into one of the rocking chairs. They were so inviting, and we could even catch glimpses of the water from the porch. It was such a peaceful way to start the day.

Perfect Location

One of our favorite things about Waters View Inn was the location. It really gave us the best of both worlds: just steps from the beach and still walkable to downtown South Haven.

We loved being so close to North Beach. It felt less crowded than South Beach during our visit, but we could still enjoy beautiful views toward the South Pier lighthouse. Being able to walk over for beach time or sunset without getting back in the car was such a huge perk. And when we wanted to explore downtown, we could easily walk to the harbor, shops, restaurants, coffee, and ice cream.

Stay tuned for more things to do in South Haven!

Tips to Know Before Booking Waters View Inn

  • Read the arrival instructions before you pull in. Waters View Inn uses a low-contact, self-check-in process, and finding the private entrance to Room #15 took us a minute at first.
  • Keep the parking situation in mind. The onsite lot is small and can feel tight, especially if you have a larger vehicle. There is street parking too.
  • Remember that South Haven is on Eastern Time. If you’re coming from the Chicago area, South Haven is one hour ahead.
  • Take advantage of the walkability and bring your comfy shoes.  We walked to North Beach, along the harbor, across the drawbridge, into downtown, and to shops, restaurants, coffee, and ice cream.
  • Absolutely do NOT miss a North Beach sunset. Being so close to the beach made it easy for us to head over in the evening without turning it into a big outing.
  • You don’t have to wait for the coffee shops to open. Room #15 has its own coffee maker and ground coffee, and coffee is also available in the inn’s main dining area in the morning.
  • Check out the morning breakfast offerings. The inn provides a light breakfast with coffee, fruit, and homemade breakfast cakes. We especially loved the baked goodies.
  • For a bigger breakfast, Bunde’s Bakery Cafe is right across the street. Go earlier in the day if you want the best selection since popular items can sell out.
  • Room #15 is especially nice for families who need more space. Our family of five appreciated having separate sleeping areas instead of everyone sharing one traditional hotel room.
  • Beach towels are provided. That’s one less bulky item you need to pack for Lake Michigan.
  • Ask questions if you have them. Communication with Bobby was easy by both text and email, and Kaitlyn was available at the inn if we needed help during our stay.
  • Traveling with a dog? Ask before booking. Only select rooms, including Room #15, are pet-friendly, and arrangements need to be made in advance.
  • If accessibility is important, contact Waters View Inn directly before arrival. Our room had easy access to a ramp.
  • Don’t assume every room is like Room #15. Waters View Inn has a variety of room configurations, so look closely at the specific room you’re booking.
