Unique Fall things to Do Chicago Sububs

Looking for unique fall things to do in the Chicago suburbs beyond the usual pumpkin patch or apple orchard? You’re in the right place!

We love a good day of apple picking and pumpkin hunting, but some of our favorite fall adventures are the ones that are a little different. Think getting lost in an apple tree maze, wandering through the Hundred Acre Wood, sipping fall coffee on a farm, hanging out with alpacas and exploring the backroads of McHenry County.

Whether you’re looking for a family day out, a cozy fall date or simply something new to add to your seasonal bucket list, these are some of the most unique ways to celebrate fall around Chicagoland.

Get Lost in an Apple Tree Maze

Here’s a maze with a twist. Instead of wandering through rows of corn, head to Royal Oak Farm Orchard in Harvard and get lost among actual apple trees! During Amaze ’N Apples, grab a map and make your way through the maze while searching for letters hidden at marked points along the route. Write them down, unscramble them to reveal a phrase and complete the challenge for a sweet reward. We tried the maze during our visit and loved that it was something completely different from the traditional corn maze.

Fun find: Royal Oak Farm Orchard even wrote a children’s book about Amaze ’N Apples, which would be such a cute way to remember your visit or get the kids excited before you go.

Plus, you can easily turn it into a full fall day with apple picking, U-pick flowers, cider slushies, donuts and a stop at the market before heading home.

Tip: Don’t skip the central climbing tower. It gives you a fun view over the apple tree maze and makes a great photo stop!

Go on a Fall Coffee Crawl

Who says fall adventures have to revolve around pumpkins? The 2026 Community Coffee Crawl runs from September 1 through October 25 and gives you an excuse to explore locally owned coffee shops throughout the western suburbs. There are eight stops on this year’s crawl, including shops in Oswego, Plainfield, Yorkville, Naperville and Aurora.

We started our crawl at Keller’s Coffee Barn at Keller’s Farmstand in Oswego, and this isn’t your typical coffee shop. It’s literally a little coffee shop located on a farm! Of course, we had to go all-in on the fall drinks. I tried an iced pumpkin spice latte with oat milk, followed by an apple cider float.

Because apparently one fall drink wasn’t enough.

Pick up a crawl card at any participating location and collect a stamp with a purchase at each stop. Complete the entire crawl and you can turn in your card for a Keller’s Farmstand e-gift card and a chance to win a raffle basket.

When: September 1–October 25, 2026

See Fall Colors at Anderson Japanese Gardens

For a completely different kind of fall outing, head to Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford. The gardens are beautiful any time of year, but fall brings another layer of color to the winding paths, bridges, waterfalls, ponds and traditional Japanese landscaping. It’s such a peaceful place to slow down, wander and enjoy the season, especially if you’re looking for a fall outing that doesn’t revolve around pumpkins, corn mazes or festivals. We love this one for a quieter fall day trip, and it’s absolutely gorgeous for photos.

Bonus fall fun: Visit during The Path of Pumpkins, October 17–24, 2026, when carved pumpkins created by regional schools are displayed throughout the gardens.

Get Lost in a Dolly Parton Corn Maze

This isn’t your ordinary corn maze! Head to All Seasons Orchard in Woodstock to wander through a six-acre corn maze honoring Dolly Parton and her Imagination Library. Grab a passport before heading into the maze and test your Dolly knowledge with trivia along the way.

When: August 29–November 1, 2026

Take a Walk Through the Hundred Acre Wood

Fans of Winnie the Pooh will want to add Winnie the Pooh at Lyman Woods to their fall plans. This adorable fall event brings the Hundred Acre Wood to life as families explore the trails and meet Winnie the Pooh and his friends along the way. This one is especially cute for younger kids and such a fun alternative to another day at the pumpkin patch.

Looking for more to do around the area? Yorktown Center is just a few minutes away!

See Pumpkins Turned Into Works of Art

You haven’t seen jack-o’-lanterns quite like these! During Jack O’ Lantern World in Lake Zurich, walk through illuminated displays filled with intricately carved pumpkins, giant pumpkin sculptures and tons of fun fall photo ops. Visit after the sun goes down to really see the displays glow.

Have an Alpaca Adventure

How about spending a fall day with alpacas? Two local alpaca experiences we’ve loved are SafeHouse Farm Alpacas / Ye Olde Alpaca Shop in Barrington and Magic Meadows Alpacas in Wonder Lake. There’s just something about hanging out with alpacas on a crisp fall day!

National Alpaca Farm Days is typically held during the last weekend in September and is one of the best times to visit. Participating alpaca farms across the country open their gates so visitors can meet the animals, learn more about alpacas and alpaca farming, see demonstrations and shop alpaca products. Even better, many participating farms offer free admission. Add this one to your calendar when you start planning next fall!

Spend the Day Hopping From Farm to Farm

This is one of our favorite fall events! Instead of visiting just one farm, why not visit a bunch? During the McHenry County Farm Stroll, families can create their own route through McHenry County and stop at participating local farms. Some farms offer tours or demonstrations, while others have farm-fresh products and produce available to purchase. Even better? The Farm Stroll itself is free.

The 2026 McHenry County Farm Stroll was held on September 27, so you’ll have to catch this one next year.

Celebrate Spooky Season at the Zoo

Even the zoo gets into the Halloween spirit!  During Boo! at the Zoo at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, the zoo transforms for spooky season with Halloween decorations, themed treats and festive photo ops. On weekends, you’ll find even more activities including costume parades and additional Halloween fun. It’s a great option if your kids love Halloween but aren’t quite ready for haunted houses and scarier Halloween attractions.

When: October 3–25, 2026
Where: Brookfield Zoo Chicago

Go Scarecrow Spotting in Downtown St. Charles

Make a game out of finding your favorite scarecrow during Scarecrow Weekend in St. Charles. More than 120 handmade scarecrows take over downtown, and visitors can walk around checking them out and voting for their favorites. But don’t stop at the scarecrows. The weekend also includes family activities, live entertainment, festive photo ops and the Autumn on the Fox Craft Show at nearby Pottawatomie Park.

When: October 9–11, 2026
Where: Downtown St. Charles

Explore the Backroads During Autumn Drive

Instead of going to one destination, Autumn Drive takes you on a fall road trip through the country roads and backroads of McHenry County.  Follow the route to discover farms, antiques, handmade crafts, food, pumpkins, hayrides and all kinds of little stops along the way. Part of the fun is simply driving around, seeing what you discover and enjoying the fall scenery between stops.

When: October 16–18, 2026
Where: McHenry County

Step Into a Storybook Village of Tiny Cottages

One of the most unique fall events in the suburbs has to be Cottages in the Woods at Good Templar Park in Geneva. Hidden beneath the trees are historic Swedish stugor, or tiny cottages, that open their doors for one special fall weekend. Wander from cottage to cottage while shopping handmade crafts, folk art, pottery, jewelry, vintage finds and other goodies. You’ll also find a Swedish bakery, food trucks and kids’ activities throughout the event. It really does look like you’ve stepped into a little storybook village.

When: October 17–18, 2026
Where: Good Templar Park, Geneva

Which Unique Fall Experience Would You Try?

There are plenty of pumpkin patches and apple orchards around Chicago, and we love those too. But sometimes it’s fun to switch things up! Whether you’re wandering through tiny Swedish cottages, hanging out with alpacas, road-tripping through the McHenry County countryside or drinking your way through a fall coffee crawl, there are plenty of ways to make the season feel a little more memorable.

Which one would you add to your fall bucket list?
