Planning a trip to Minneapolis with kids? You’ll be surprised at how much this city has to offer for families. From iconic landmarks and hands-on museums to unique eats and plenty of outdoor adventures, Minneapolis is filled with experiences both parents and kids will love. Our family had a blast exploring, and we can’t wait to share some of our favorite spots to help you plan your own Minneapolis family getaway.
Stone Arch Bridge
The Stone Arch Bridge is one of Minneapolis’ most popular landmarks, so we knew we had to check it out. We were excited to find out it had reopened early during our visit. Once a railroad bridge, it’s now pedestrian-only and the only stone arch bridge that crosses the Mississippi River. As we walked across, we spotted plenty of runners and bikers enjoying it too. The views did not disappoint: the Minneapolis skyline on one side and St. Anthony Falls rushing below.
Mill Ruins Park
Right next to the Stone Arch Bridge is Mill Ruins Park, so it was an easy stop to add on. We walked along the paths and checked out the remains of the old flour mills. The kids liked getting a closer look at the stone walls and we all thought the view of the bridge from the park was pretty cool.
Sculpture Garden
Sculpture gardens are always a family favorite, so we knew we had to visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center to see the iconic Spoonbridge & Cherry. We were surprised to discover so much more like over 60 sculptures spread across 11 acres. We loved strolling through the paths and finding quirky pieces, while enjoying the mix of art and city views. Best of all, it’s completely free!
Tip: Parking at lot next to sculpture park for $5.
Minneapolis Institute of Art
After visiting the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), I still can’t believe this incredible museum is free! With more than 100,000 objects spanning 5,000 years, every gallery felt like stepping into a different part of the world. We could have easily spent hours wandering, but the standout for us was the Asian art section – so detailed and beautiful that we found ourselves lingering longer than planned. We didn’t make it to the upper galleries this time (our feet gave out before we did!), but it just gives us a reason to come back.
Tip: Street parking and nearby lots make it easy to visit.
Bakken Museum
When I saw that the Bakken Museum had an exhibit on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, I knew we had to stop by. I’m so glad we did because this is not your ordinary science museum!
The interactive exhibits kept all of us engaged from making music and stop-motion movies to trying out Ben Franklin’s experiments (electric shock, anyone?) One of the coolest (and slightly creepy!) experiences was Frankenstein’s Laboratory, an immersive theater show about the story of Frankenstein. Heads up – it might be a little scary for younger kids.
Don’t miss the LEGO scavenger hunt — it was actually pretty challenging, and yes, even my husband and I joined in.

Wild Rumpus
Looking for one of the most unique indie children’s bookstores? Add Wild Rumpus in Minneapolis to your list. From the moment you step through the tiny purple door at the entrance, you know you’re in for something whimsical and wonderful. Book lovers will no doubt be in heaven – I know I was!
But Wild Rumpus is more than just books. It’s the little surprises that make it unforgettable. Take the bathroom mirror, for example: switch off the lights and a glowing fish tank appears behind the glass. Make sure you say hello their animals that include 2 cats, chinchillas, birds, and a gecko.
While here stop by Pinwheels and Play Toys, a toy store filled from the top to bottom. Creatives will absolutely adore Heartfelt, a craft store.
Minnehaha Falls
Within Minnehaha Regional Park, Minnehaha Falls is one of the most iconic sights in Minneapolis. Nestled in the park, we would have never expected to find a 53-foot waterfall! The rushing water tumbles down the falls before eventually flowing into the Mississippi River.
After parking, it only took a couple of minutes to reach the falls and take in their full glory. We headed to the right for a close-up view from the top, then made our way down the staircase to the base to feel the power of the falls and hear the mighty roar of the water.
After soaking it all in, we weren’t ready to leave just yet. We followed the creekside trail for a bit, crossing stone bridges and discovering little sandy spots perfect.
Matt’s Bar and Grill
How could we not visit Minneapolis and not get a Juicy Lucy, a classic beef patty stuffed with cheese? We headed to Matt’s Bar, the spot that claims to be the original home of this iconic burger, and it didn’t disappoint. One bite in and gooey cheese came pouring out (a true Jucy Lucy experience!). Don’t forget to grab some fries to go with it. Pro tip: it’s cash only!
Mall of America
The Mall of America is a must when visiting Minnesota. And with a name like that, you know it’s going to be huge. With more than 520 stores, 50 restaurants, and even a full theme park, you could easily spend days exploring.
With four levels of shopping, it helps to have a game plan. While my husband and kids had their shopping stops mapped out, I had my eye on the food. We sipped on boba from Niko Niko (love their Muffy collab!), indulged in Japanese cream puffs from Beard Papa’s, stocked up on Asian treats at Ebisu, and dug into Korean fried chicken at Bonchon.
Pro tip: Grab the coupon book – it saved us a ton!
Rollercoaster fun at Nickelodeon Universe
Did you know the Mall of America has its very own amusement park? Nickelodeon Universe is the largest indoor amusement park in the country and packed with rides for all ages. You’ll spot the classics like a carousel and Ferris wheel, but there are plenty of Nickelodeon-themed rides to keep the kids busy too. The family isn’t big on roller coasters, but they had a blast on the Pepsi Orange Streak, a fun ride that zips around the park without being too scary and no big dips!
SEALife Aquarium
Did you know Mall of America has not only an amusement park but also an aquarium? SEA LIFE Minnesota is home to more than 10,000 creatures swimming in 1.3 million gallons of water. Our favorite part? Hands down the 300-foot tunnel where fish, sharks, and turtles glide right over your head!
WHERE TO STAY
Our stay at the Westin Edina was just what our family needed. The location made it super easy to get to all the main attractions in Minneapolis and Bloomington, from shopping to family fun. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, which was perfect after long days of exploring. If you’re traveling with kids, I recommend upgrading to Club Access. It was so convenient having breakfast ready in the morning, plus snacks, drinks, and even desserts in the evening. It made our stay feel extra special (and stress-free!).
