Savanna, Illinois may be a small Mississippi River town, but there’s plenty to fill a fun family weekend getaway! From exploring Mississippi Palisades State Park and walking or biking the Great River Trail to checking out downtown Savanna, grabbing coffee, and even hopping across the river to Sabula, Iowa or driving to Galena, we found so many easy ways to enjoy the area. Add in a truly unique stay at Savanna Haven, and Savanna makes such a fun home base for exploring this scenic stretch of northwest Illinois.
Things to Do in Savanna Illinois
Visit Mississippi Palisades State Park
Just a few minutes outside downtown Savanna, Mississippi Palisades State Park is a must for beautiful views of the Mississippi River. The 2,500-acre park is known for its towering bluffs, wooded trails, and scenic overlooks high above the river. Even if you don’t have time for a long hike, you can drive through the park and stop at several overlooks for gorgeous views.
Browse Books and Grab Coffee at The Novel Bloom
Want to grab coffee? How about a book? Flowers? Cocktails? At The Novel Bloom you can do all four! Without a doubt, my favorite finds in downtown Savanna was The Novel Bloom. And it may honestly be one of the cutest spots in town! I loved wandering around the two floors of books and taking in all the little details. The whole place has such a fun, slightly moody vibe, complete with gorgeous peacock wallpaper that immediately caught my eye.
You can grab a coffee or matcha while you browse, and they even serve cocktails on select days. Be sure to keep an eye on their calendar too since they host fun special events throughout the year. Even better, The Novel Bloom is just a short walk from Savanna Haven, making it an easy stop to add while exploring downtown Savanna.
Stroll through Marquette Park
Marquette Park is a peaceful riverfront park right along the Mississippi River in Savanna. It’s an easy spot to stop for a stroll, enjoy the river views, or relax for a bit, and the Great River Trail runs nearby – making it a nice outdoor stop while exploring downtown Savanna.
Walk or Bike the Great River Trail
One of my favorite ways to explore a new destination is by going for a run, and Savanna made that easy! The Great River Bike Trail runs along the Mississippi Riverfront, with beautiful views of the river along the way. Since we were staying just a couple of blocks from the river, I could head out in the morning and hop right on the trail. It was such a peaceful way to start the day and enjoy a different side of Savanna.
Grab Coffee at Tailored Brews
Tailored Brews is a cute coffee shop in Savanna that’s worth the quick drive away from downtown. From the outside, you might not expect the modern interior, but inside you’ll find a stylish space with black and wood accents and a relaxed vibe. We tried the blackberry vanilla drink and a matcha latte, and both were really good. They also have a convenient drive-thru, making it an easy stop whether you want to hang out for a bit or grab your coffee to go.
Take a Side Trip to Sabula, Iowa
Just across the Mississippi River from Savanna, make the quick drive over to Sabula, Iowa, known as Iowa’s only island city. Part of the fun is simply crossing the bridge over the Mississippi River to get there, with beautiful river views along the way. Once on the island, take some time to drive around, enjoy the peaceful scenery, and soak in the charm of this tiny river town. You don’t need a ton of time here, which makes Sabula an easy and unique addition to a Savanna-area day trip.

Day Trips from Savanna
Coffee and antiques at Elizabeth Antique Mall
If you love antiquing, make time for a stop at Elizabeth’s Grand Antique Co. Housed inside a former high school, this massive antique mall has three floors packed with vintage treasures, collectibles, home decor, and plenty of quirky, unexpected finds. Half the fun is wandering from room to room and seeing what you discover next. Before you browse, grab a coffee, Italian soda, or root beer on tap from Café 1889. You can even take your drink with you while you shop. Truly such a fun time!
Galena
Galena is always worth a visit, especially for its adorable historic downtown filled with shops, restaurants, and plenty of fun stops. Grab a flight of root beer at Root Beer Revelry, then browse Poopsie’s, one of the coolest toy and gift stores around. History lovers should also make time for the Ulysses S. Grant Home, where you can tour the former president’s home for free.
Fulton Illinois
Fulton is a fun Mississippi River town to add to your trip, especially for its Dutch heritage. Be sure to check out the De Immigrant Windmill, where they still grind flour and flaxseed, and stop by the nearby Windmill Cultural Center to see the detailed windmill models and learn more about windmills from around the world.
Clinton, Iowa
Just across the Mississippi River, Clinton, Iowa makes a fun day trip from Savanna—especially if you’re a Thomas Dambo fan! Go on a hunt for the city’s three giant wooden trolls, known as The Tree Thieves, made from reclaimed wood, and keep an eye out for clues that lead to a secret fourth installation. We originally went to Clinton for the trolls and ended up finding plenty more to explore along the way.
Where to Stay in Savanna, Illinois
For a truly unique place to stay, check out Savanna Haven, a beautifully converted historic church just a couple of blocks from downtown Savanna and the Mississippi River. We loved the mix of original stained-glass windows and historic charm with modern comforts like a full kitchen, hot tub, firepit, arcade games, karaoke, and plenty of space for the whole family. It was such a fun and memorable home base for exploring Savanna and the surrounding Mississippi River towns.
Is Savanna, Illinois Worth Visiting?
Savanna ended up being such a fun little getaway, with the perfect mix of outdoor adventures, small-town charm, good food and coffee, and beautiful Mississippi River views. We loved that we could spend part of the day hiking or exploring along the river, then slow things down with a stroll through downtown or a unique stop nearby. If you’re looking for an easy Illinois weekend getaway that feels a little different, Savanna is definitely worth adding to your list.
