Lost River Cave Tour: Underground Adventure in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Tucked away in the heart of Bowling Green, (seriously you would never realize it’s there!) Lost River Cave is one of the most unique things things to do in the area. From its one-of-a-kind underground boat tour to peaceful walking trails, it’s easy to see why this spot is a local favorite. It was one of our favorite things we did in Bowling Green (and we did a lot!). Visit in October and you’ll be treated to the annual Scarecrow Trail, where creative and colorful scarecrows line the trail. Whether you’re here to uncover the cave’s fascinating history or simply enjoy a beautiful Kentucky day outdoors, Lost River Cave is a must for families and nature lovers alike.

Getting Started at Lost River Cave Boat Tour

After checking in or grabbing your tickets at the Visitor Center, follow the paved path and cross the bridge to the meeting area. Don’t skip the Visitor Center. It’s perfect for a quick pit stop, a little shopping, and fun photos with murals (we loved the butterfly one!)

The Lost River Cave Tour

Before entering the cave, our guide led a 20-minute walk along the Lost River, sharing stories about the blue holes and the cave’s unique history. We learned all sorts of fun facts like how Jesse James might have once used the cave as a hideout and that it even operated as a nightclub back in the day!

Once it was time to board, our group was split into two boats. For the first few seconds of the ride, everyone has to duck their heads (a definite highlight for the kids!), and then the real adventure begins. As we glided through the cave, our guide pointed out interesting formations and encouraged questions along the way. The boat travels to the end of the dam before turning back the same way. We wished the boat ride was longer, but it was truly a memorable experience. Definitely one of our favorite things to do in Bowling Green!

Note: Children 12 and under will need a life jacket. A light jacket may be helpful as the cave temperature is in the high 50s.
