Whenever we need a quick getaway, Indianapolis always beckons. What we love about the Circle City is that there is so many things to do! So this time around we were going to try a few new things that we haven’t experienced yet. Read all about our our fun-filled family weekend in Indianapolis and plan a fun trip soon!
Enjoy art and stroll through the gardens
Formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Newfields is the art museum you cannot miss. During winter we experienced a winter lights show at Newfields and couldn’t wait to come back and experience it in daylight. Amazing! The art museum is wonderful and you can find amazing pieces of art including the original LOVE statue by Robert Indiana or beautiful van Gogh paintings. Our visit couldn’t have been timed better as we visited during their Art in Bloom exhibit.
Stay tuned: In June 2021, Newfields will host the largest special exhibit in its history, THE LUME, with 30,000 square feet of immersive projections of Vincent van Gogh’s work. Check out the website to see some of the initial mock-ups! Looks incredible!
Not only does Newfields have an fantastic art museum, but the grounds is absolutely beautiful with gardens, the old Lilly estate, and a beer garden.
Enjoy art outdoors
You all know we love sculptures, and the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park has a few great pieces including Funky Bones and a functional swing art.
Take a hike
We couldn’t resist taking a mile-plus hike around the lake. Ultimate cool factor? Finding these fun yellow benches all along the lake trail. They are not only functional but pieces of art.
Visit the hip Bottleworks District and eat your heart out
If you love food and fun head to Indy’s newest area, The Bottleworks District! The former Coca-Cola bottling plant has transformed into a hip district with Indy’s first food hall, The Garage, as well as a fancy new hotel, boutiques, duckpin bowling, yoga, movie theater, and so much more! Read all about the Bottleworks District.
Become a superhero
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is one of our favorite children’s museums around. But what makes us come back again and again are the always changing exhibits. On our particular visit, they were featuring DC Super Heroes. The best part? It’s completely hands-on and interactive! Check out my Facebook post for details.
Explore the canal by bike
We rented a surrey bike from Wheel Fun Rentals and rode through the canal. Although it was a bit busy trying to dodge people, we still had a blast. I absolutely love the murals painted throughout the canal.
My kids cannot resist playgrounds so this one right on the canal made the perfect stop.
Tip: You can also rent a paddlewheel boat or even go on a gondola ride.
It was my son’s birthday weekend as well and his wish was pretty simple – to find a toy shop that sold action figures (specifically Dragon Ball). We were so happy to have found The Toy Pit. Such a cool store with Funko Pops, toys from the 80s, and so much more!
Grab some Vietnamese Food
Just a few minutes away from The Toy Pit was Chao Vietnamese Street Food. Everything we got was good! Highly recommend the Bahn Mi sandwiches, bubble tea, and definitely the fish sauce chicken wings! OMG, so good.
