We’ve lived in the northwest suburbs for a few years and one of the places we always hear about is the Randall Oaks Zoo and the “secret” park. We finally made the visit and here’s what we thought.

Our experience at Randall Oaks Zoo:

Once you enter you’ll see animals such as pigs and goats inside the red barn. You’ll also find the reptiles in the glass tanks.

Then you’ll go outside and find the rest of the animals. A staff member walked around with a snake. We could even pet it!

In the center of the zoo is the petting zoo which was easily the highlight of the visit with cows and goats. We could buy food to feed them or brush their hair. The kids had so much fun here!

If you veer to the right, you’ll find more animals such as raccoons, porcupines, and foxes.

It didn’t take too long to explore the zoo. We probably saw all the animals in about an hour or so. They also offer pony rides but since it was so hot out we didn’t get a chance to ride.

Our experience with the “Secret” Park:

  • Two playgrounds structures — one for little kids and one for older ones. The equipment is a little old and outdated but still fun nonetheless.

  • Always a fun time with a zip line and see saw.

  • Regular and bucket swings.
  • A huge sand area!

  • Two picnic tables located in the shade.

How to get to the “Secret” Park:

Ok, we totally missed the park it was so secret.

Here’s how to get there.

  • Enter the parking lot of the Randall Oaks Zoo area and head to the right.
  • Follow along the road until you see the huge water tower and the community shelter and park there.

  • Enter the paved trail by the handicap parking spots.

  • The short trail will lead you to the playground. Ta da! No doubt the kids will spot it and run to it.

Tips:

  • Check the daily schedule for fun things like animal talks, animal feedings, and more.
  • Wear bug spray if you’ll be going to the secret park. You’re walking on a short trail through the woods to reach the park.

Bottom Line:

What a fun day out! Definitely recommend if you’re looking to spend a few hours with the kids!
