On our latest visit to Indianapolis (read all the fun details here), we also stopped by Hamilton County. We’ve visited Hamilton County in the past and absolutely love that there is so much to explore. On this particularly visit we only had a half day to explore, but what a fun half day it was!
Places to PLAY
When we’re in Hamilton County we always love visiting Conner Prairie, a Smithsonian-affiliated living history museum. They are particularly known for their tethered hot air balloon rides, but unfortunately weather has never been on our side so we haven’t had a chance to ride it yet. The day we visited was no exception. Next time, right?
But we weren’t disappointed for too long since we knew that Conner Prairie had tons of other things we could do. We can never resist saying hi to animals so our first stop by Animal Encounters. Plus, they welcomed a few new baby animals.
Then we were off to explore Treetop Outpost. I was particularly excited about this since this is a newer addition since our last visit.
What a fun four-story treehouse! Kids could enjoy puzzles, learn a few facts, play an I-Spy Game, and of course take in the views.
After exploring the treehouse, the kids couldn’t wait to explore everything on the grounds. They could make music, balance on logs, paint with water, rock art, sand play, play in the stick structures, and so much more!
We were particularly excited to come during opening week so we were one of the firsts to scope out their newest addition to the area – Fort Hoosier. The wooden playground offers so much fun for kids like tunnels, rock climbing walls, nets, pulleys and more. Anything to get the kids up and moving.
Conner Prairie also has plenty for things to do indoors. My son absolutely loved building things with wood in their woodworking section, Makesmith.
The kids also had a blast in Discovery Station with a play structure, pretend play sections, and an art and craft
We spent several hours at Conner Prairie, but we only explored a fraction of what they offered. We all had such a good time here!
Places to EAT
We definitely worked up an appetite and we were ready to hit up BRU Burger Bar in Carmel. We’re suckers for pretzels so we couldn’t help ordering the soft pretzels that came with beer cheese and spicy mustard. As a nacho lovin’ familia, we couldn’t resist their nachos.
They have such a variety of burgers to choose from. The hard part will be choosing the kind of burger you want to eat. If you want big and over-the-top, try their Honey Chipotle BBQ Burger. It was named one of America’s over-the-top burger by Esquire Magazine. I had the Provencal Burger while my husband had the patty melt. One thing’s for sure – they don’t skimp out on the burgers.
Although our bellies were full, we always ALWAYS save room for dessert. Next up, gelato!
You know we love our desserts and when we heard that there was a new-ish gelato place around the corner, we couldn’t wait to try it. Located in an unassuming strip mall, Mamma Mia Gelato will have you singing Mammia Mia! They had fantastic gelato with great flavors and best of all it was all homemade in-house!
Since it was evening and we had a 3-hour drive ahead of us, my husband needed coffee. The cup of Umbria espresso was just what we needed. We liked it so much that we bought a bag for ourselves.
The games were also a welcome distraction while we sipped our coffee. Genius!
What a great find! We hope to visit again when we’re in the area. ‘Til next time Mammamia!
