During our Michigan escape to New Buffalo, we hit up a couple spots that I think would make great daytrips – Galien River County Park and New Buffalo Township Playground.

Galien River County Park

The 86-acre County Park includes forests, a river, and a marsh. Cool fact: This was formed by glaciers and the melting waters is what formed the river, Lake Michigan, and upland bluffs.

Getting Started:

Finding Galien River County Park was pretty easy. There is a parking lot with a small amount of parking spots. ( I can see this filling up on really busy days.) We visited on a Sunday and didn’t have a hard time finding parking. There are portable restrooms in the parking lot.

Our experience:

After parking, we entered the trailhead and made a right at the fork. We followed the trail on packed dirt and winded our way down to the boardwalk. It was quite a sight once we spotted the marsh. We walked across the 600′ boardwalk trying to spot signs of life. The end of boardwalk brought us to the Galien River (and a fishing platform) where we saw a few kayakers enjoying the river.

As soon as we were done taking in the views, we returned the way we came in and made a right at the fork and headed up the stairs. Lots of stairs. This time we came face to face with the forest and walked across the 300′ canopy walk. The views from 60′ up were pretty amazing.

We could have taken the longer route, but decided to take it easy and make a right, then a left back to our parking lot.

Overall, this hike was pretty easy and loved that it was wheelchair/stroller accessible. If you have at least 30 minutes to spare, this would be a great spot to bring the family!

New Buffalo Township Playground

If you’re going to Galien River County Park and you have kids, head across the street to New Buffalo Township Playground. A great playground and fun diversion if you need one.  Find two playgrounds, gated and with rubber flooring. There’s even a splash pad attached.

Besides the playground, there is a nature trail, fitness area (which they deemed so much fun), bocce, chess tables, and so much more. Definitely check it out!

If you’re looking to add to the fun, the playground is a great way to let the kids get more energy out!
