Our latest winter getaway brought us to Galena, Illinois with the family. (Read all about our family stay here.) One perk of bringing the grandparents with us was being able to sneak away and enjoy a night out on the town. Located just 10-15 minutes away from our resort, historic Downtown Galena was unbelievablly charming with its historic architecture, quaint streets, restaurants, and boutiques. It was the perfect setting for our date night.

Disclosure: We were  provided a complimentary meal at Fried Green Tomatoes in exchange for a review. I was not required to express a particular point of view, and all opinions are my own.

A Sunday winter evening visit to Downtown Galena didn’t give us many options of things to do since many shops were already closed. Fortunately for us one spot was still open – Galena Cellars – with 15 minutes to spare. That was more than enough time for us! Since we visited the Geneva location before it closed, we knew we would like anything we tried.

With such an amazing selection, we tried a tasting flight of reds. The sommelier was super friendly even as we quickly downed our wines before our dinner reservation.  If you’re into wine, I highly recommend making a stop here! I saw that they have the vineyard nearby and hope to visit it in the future.

Fried Green Tomatoes

After our quick yet super fun wine tasting it was time for food! We took a short stroll down Main Street and followed the sound of Italian music to Fried Green Tomatoes.  It was a sign of good things to come. When we walked in we were greeted warmly and although our table wasn’t ready we didn’t mind sitting at the bar grabbing more drinks. The ambiance was extremely cozy with open brick faced walls, high ceilings, and decorated tastefully.

How could we not start off the night without trying the restaurant’s namesake, fried green tomatoes. My husband I had never tried it before, but after experiencing the goodness I have to say I am a fan! It was so, so good. Perfectly breaded, flavorful, and just the right amount of cheese and sauce. Definitely recommend!

My husband has an adventurous palate so when he spied the Beef Carpaccio, a raw tenderloin with capers, lemon, and sea salt,  he had to try it.  He truly enjoyed it!

Afterwards, we were given an Italian loaf bread and house salad with home made raspberry vinaigrette.  Let me tell you, if I didn’t have restraint I would have finished the entire loaf. Dip it with their olive oil for the perfect combination.

Choosing an entree was a touch choice since everything looked great. But my husband and I were craving fish so we ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and Cedar Planked Walleye. It was just what we needed. The fish was fresh and the sauces complemented the meal.

I don’t know about you, but I always leave room for dessert no matter how full I am. I am SO glad I did. The tiramisu was just what we needed and the perfect way to end our date night… on a sweet note!
