Looking for a fun date night idea? See Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel! No need to travel to Italy to see his work of it – it has made it’s way to the Chicagoland area. The Sistine Chapel Exhibition lets visitors see the masterpiece from a different perspective. After you have fully immersed yourself in art, you can grab dinner, indulge in ice cream and macarons. So go ahead and find a sitter. Let’s plan a date night!
Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition
The Sistine Chapel Exhibition lets art lovers see Michaelangelo’s masterpiece from a different perspective using high definition photos and a special printing technique that gives guests the same look and feel as the originals. No need to crane your neck to look at the ceilings – the images are displayed right in front of you allowing you to see every detail and every brush stroke. Not only is signage posted to give you an idea of what you’re looking at, but there are also audio guides available. We used our phones and scanned a QR code which gave us so much more insight. I highly recommend doing that!
Honest truth: We’ve been to the Sistine Chapel years ago and we did not remember much of it. After all, it’s tough looking at artwork from a distance with your neck craned. After going through the exhibit and seeing 32 frescoes up close, we realized that Michaelangelo didn’t just paint beautifully, but he had a story to tell with each and every fresco. Truly a labor of love!
Tip: Don’t forget to take a selfie as evidence of your date night.
You know I love my ice cream, so when I saw that they had a Jeni’s Ice Cream here we needed to go. Oh my gosh, so many yummy flavors. If you’re like me and can’t decide you can choose a sampler with 10 half scoops. I knew I couldn’t finish it all so my husband and I shared 3 half scoops. Oh my. Please get the lavender when you go there. (I am a bit obsessed with lavender, as you may know.)
Get your mac(arons) on
Okay, not only do I love ice cream, but I can’t get enough of macarons. Lucky me, they just opened up a Le Macaron. The owners had a shop in Chicago and moved their shop here. Yay for me (and you!)
Food + Beer
A fun date night always includes beer and/or wine and found Old Town Pourhouse which offered 90 beers on tap. Perfect! While we did have a burger and a chicken sandwich, we would probably just skip that and stick to the beer. (There are tons of dining options around the mall especially at The District food hall.) They have curated beer flights or you can pick your own. I liked that they had a good selection of sweet/sour beers. My husband was happy with their Belgians although a few were sold out.
Tips to enjoy the Sistine Chapel Exhibition
- Make sure to get your timed tickets in advance.
- Get planning! You have until August 15 before it leaves Chicagoland
- The address is 2120 Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook but I would plug in Lifetime Fitness instead. We found the entrance close to it.
- It is kid-friendly but there is nudity.
- Food & beverage will be available for purchase on site, but you can just take a few steps into the mall. Especially to the District, their food hall.
